Getting an Environmental Control System

Step 1. Talk to a Healthcare Professional

Discuss your needs with an Occupational Therapist, healthcare professional or specialist service to determine whether an Environmental Control System could help improve independence.

Step 2. Referral to a Specialist Service

If appropriate, a referral may be made to a specialist NHS Environmental Control (EC) or Assistive Technology (AT) service. These services assess people’s needs and recommend suitable technology to support everyday activities.

Step 3. Find Your Nearest Service

If you’re unsure which service covers your area, you can use the NHS service finder to locate your local Environmental Control, Assistive Technology or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) service.

Step 4. Attend an Assessment

A specialist team will carry out an assessment to understand the person’s goals, daily activities and access needs. Depending on the service, this may involve Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Engineers, Clinical Scientists or other assistive technology specialists.

Step 5. Trial, Configuration and Installation

If an Environmental Control System is recommended, the equipment will usually be trialled and configured to suit the person’s needs. Once the most appropriate solution has been identified, it will be installed and the person, along with their family, carers or support team, will receive training on how to use it.

Step 6. Ongoing Support

After installation, the Environmental Control Service will continue to provide support as needed. This may include follow-up appointments, maintenance, repairs, adjustments to the system and reassessments if the person’s needs change over time.
